US Customs has introduced a new mandatory requirement for travellers planning on entering or transiting the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). The VWP is available for nationals of 27 countries (including the UK) who are travelling for temporary business or leisure.

This new requirement called Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) means that from 12 January 2009 all passengers travelling under the VWP are required to apply online for an ESTA.  Applications can be made at any time but no later than 72 hours prior to travel.  Failure to apply will result in denied boarding. 

A fee of US$14.00 is payable for Visa Waiver Program Travellers registering under ESTA.  The fee will include $10.00, collected pursuant to the Travel Promotion Act (TPA) and a fee of $4.00 for administering ESTA.
